Can you wear jeans in Iceland?

In town on a dry day, yes — plenty of Icelanders do. Not as your only trousers: Reykjavík gets rain or snow on 9 to 15 days a month, and denim soaked by rain or waterfall spray stays cold and heavy for hours. Pack quick-drying hiking trousers for days out, and waterproof over-trousers for the wet.

Why jeans fail outdoors

Cotton soaks up water, stops insulating once it's wet and takes most of a day to dry. In Iceland's wind that wet fabric pulls heat from your legs the whole time — the reason every local guide says no cotton for days outside.

The places visitors go are wet even when it isn't raining: spray at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, sea mist on the black-sand beaches, sleet on the Golden Circle.

When jeans are fine

Evenings in Reykjavík or Akureyri, restaurants, museums, a dry summer day in town. Iceland is casual, and you'll see locals in jeans in all weathers in the city — they're never far from a warm car or café.

What to wear instead

Quick-drying synthetic hiking or softshell trousers, with thermal leggings underneath from October to April. Over them, waterproof over-trousers that pull on over your boots when the rain comes sideways.

Questions visitors ask

Can you wear jeans in Iceland in winter?

Only in town. In December Reykjavík averages -2 to 3 °C (29 to 38 °F), feels like -4 °C (25 °F) in the wind and has snow or sleet on about 14 days. Wet denim in that is cold and miserable; wear hiking trousers over thermal leggings for days out (Icelandic Met Office, 1991–2020).

Can you wear jeans in Iceland in summer?

On dry days in town, yes. July in Reykjavík is mild (9 to 15 °C (48 to 59 °F)) but still has rain on about 10 days, so bring quick-drying trousers for hikes, waterfalls and boat trips.

What trousers should I bring to Iceland?

Two pairs of quick-drying hiking or softshell trousers, one pair of waterproof over-trousers, thermal leggings for October to April, and jeans only if you want them for evenings in town.
